From Director Justin Lin and Producer J.J. Abrams comes one of the best-reviewed action movies of the year. Dispatched on a rescue mission to the farthest reaches of space, the USS Enterprise is ambushed by Krall, a ruthless enemy sworn against the Federation. Crash-landing on an uncharted hostile world, Captain Kirk, Spock and the crew are separated with no means of escape. Only Jaylah, a rebellious alien warrior, can help them reunite and find a way off the planet in a race against time to stop Krall’s deadly army from triggering all-out galactic war.
3:00 – Oh god, they’re like loads of Gremlins.
4:42 – “It can be a challenge to remain grounded when even the gravity is artificial.”
9:48 – Sign me up for YorkTown please. Super trains and teleporting and stuff.
15:14 – “There’s only yourself, your ship, your crew.”
17:19 – This nebula business is quite scary.
20:42 – God, this is properly scary! The poor Enterprise!
27:50 – You can’t have Star Trek without the ship though, can you?
I suddenly remembered that we hadn’t watched the latest in the Star Trek reboot series, but having attempted to watch thirty minutes of it, I now wish I hadn’t bothered. I can’t really explain why, but it just didn’t do it for me at all. Aside from the short scene between Bones and Kirk in the bar, the characters didn’t seem to be doing anything or connecting at all.
They blew up the Enterprise which was just depressing, and when they were all boosting from the ship in their escape pods, I just thought it was going to be an exhausting watch to get them all back together again. Plus there were repercussions from the time-bending previous installment that I couldn’t remember or fathom.
Thankfully, the lens flare has gone, but it’s been replaced by shaky-cam. Justin Lin managed to save the Fast & Furious franchise, but for me, he hasn’t had the same effect on this one.
