Formerly a detective with the NYPD, now a recovering alcoholic haunted by regrets, Matt Scudder (Liam Neeson) has a lot to make up for. When a series of kidnappings targeting the city's worst drug criminals escalates to grisly murder, the circuit's ruthless leader convinces Scudder to find the culprits and bring them to bloody justice. Working as an unlicensed private detective, Matt sees what the police don't see and treads where they most fear to. Operating just outside the law to track down the monsters responsible, Scudder stops just short of becoming one himself.

Time Comment
3:06 Always boggles me that they would have shoot-outs in the street.
6:04 Arty credits with their own twist.
12:10 Hard to work out where his morals are. Okay with corruption, not with drug dealers.
16:36 Was about to make a comment about payphones, but this was 1999 after all.
21:32 Eyewitnesses. Tsk.
24:36 “You got that look.”
26:11 Y2K reference!
29:29 “Patience, instincts, blind luck.”
34:32 You would quit, if that happened on your day job.
40:35 I’m wondering if his collar up coat style is a fashion choice or because he is cold.
53:10 “It’s not like we have a union or anything.”
1:04:04 Liam Neeson… not so good at making friends.
1:07:49 It can’t be a profitable business, half investigating crimes and then returning the fees.
1:11:33 The bullet “took a bad hop.” Weird description.
1:20:05 He’s got some front talking to them like that. Blimey.
1:29:59 Love TJ. His attitude very much required to lighten the mood.
1:32:38 “Why aren’t you afraid?”
1:44:34 Slight serial killer situation here, in which they always come back.

It’s a bit of a joke, now, how Liam Neeson has managed to create the single character that appears in all his movies now. Guy who wants to put his crazy action lifestyle behind him, but can’t because there are bad guys on the loose, so he gets involved with bringing them to justice - usually with a gun.

I thought this was a good one, though. To be taken far more seriously than others, like Taken, and with some interesting moral thoughts - where do we stand on bad guys murdering other bad guys? Some of it was quite predictable, other stuff out of left-field. It’s violent and kind of miserable, but well made and a good watch. I hadn’t realised the character is a) already in a previous film and b) from a series of books, so I’ll have to investigate further.
