Title: Lady Bird
Director: Greta Gerwig
Run time: 1hr 34m
“Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mum (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird’s father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.”
2:11 – “Let’s just sit with what we heard.” Yea, I can’t do that either.
4:11 – That is one heck of a way to win an argument.
7:09 – The houses are so big!
10:25 – Playing one parent off against the other, classic.
12:26 – You can’t just scoff the body of Christ.
15:59 – That is so me. “Yea, Jim Morrison.” Later. “Who is Jim Morrison?”
19:37 – Loving the light up cactuses.
24:17 – At least she knows why her mum is hard on her, that’s good.
29:07 – “She’s mad we don’t have a staircase.”
35:15 – That’s a pretty bad day for both of them.
38:20 – Her accent is so good, I just remembered that she’s actually Irish.
42:08 – Coach directing the play is brilliant.
42:45 – “We were in one parking lot and then we went to another parking lot.”
49:06 – Living by bartering alone must be exhausting.
53:33 – The arguments in this are amazing.
1:01:00 – “No I didn’t, because I’m not , and I haven’t lied in two years.”
1:13:10 – Friend prom looks fun.
1:19:44 – “It’s my tracking device,” is how I’m referring to my phone from now on.
1:21:12 – Driving while crying sucks.
I really loved this. It’s a superbly strong but simple, gentle but deep coming-of-age story that has so many layers you could probably tell a hundred different stories from it. The story it does tell though is lovely, and told in a fabulously fast-paced manner. You skip from scene to scene and there’s barely a moment to take stock.
The acting is great too, with Laurie Metcalf putting in a sterling performance as the mum and Saoirse flawlessly hitting the right notes of a restless teen who desperately wants to leave home but also loves her roots. Her accent, too, was incredible.
Top notch movie, no complaints at all, recommended and recommended to watch again and again as well.
