Live blog

2:15 – It must be so weird to see shipwrecks up close. Things that should be on the surface but no longer.
6:32 – Did he call his submarine drone Snoop Dog? It does say Snoop Vision on his headset.
12:13 – Embarrassing to see that picture for the first time in 80 years on television!
16:58 – “And that makes you my new best friend.” Bleurgh!
20:54 – Always loved how the wreck morphs into the unharmed ship.
25:20 – Why would you bet these tickets in a poker game? Nonsense.
28:15 – Private promenade deck is brilliant.
32:23 – Yay! Totally forgot Ioan was in this!
37:56 – You can’t get near the front or the back of the boats anymore. So disappointing for Titanic re-enactments.
40:39 – “You just seem more like an indoor girl.” Ha!
52:26 – The clothes in this period are nice, but the hats are a bit much.
57:31 – It’s all about looking like you belong.
1:03:33 – “To make each day count.” Didn’t realise Jack was so inspo.
1:13:25 – So odd to prize “fine things” over your daughter’s happiness.
1:20:25 – Ooh, they’re at the front of the ship. I feel a song coming on.
1:36:51 – He so almost tore the painting up, but we know he didn’t.
1:41:43 – Ice cold water not so useful for keeping the fires burning.
1:47:38 – “It is a mathematical certainty.” Something they should have calculated before!
1:51:20 – I love Mr Andrews.
2:03:30 – I would get lost on that boat so easily, let alone when the lights go out.
2:13:54 – “Well, they don’t listen to us at dinner, either.”
2:33:59 – At this point it gets really hard to watch. The panic.
2:52:23 – Yea, Ioan the hero’s starring moment.

Conclusions

On the one hand, I feel bad for having got to almost 750 films without watching Titanic, but on the other hand, have you seen the length of this film? When is there time to watch a 3+ hour film and really give it the attention it deserves? Well, I’ll tell you, it’s when you’re sick and don’t have anything to do other than sit on the sofa and weep at the fate of Jack and Rose.

There’s not much to say here that hasn’t already been said about this film. It’s long, and I did feel every minute of it past about 2.5hrs. But having said that, it never actually felt boring which is an impressive feat, it held my attention and was hugely emotional. I do wonder if it wouldn’t be an equally good film without the modern day stuff, thus shortening it by about an hour but who am I to question Mr Cameron?

Considering this was made in 1997, the visuals are stunning. There’s only the occasional shot that doesn’t quite look like a real boat is there, otherwise it’s amazing work. I feel for the actors who must have spent the majority of the shoot waist high in water!

It’s definitely a film worth it’s legendary status, and whilst it won’t be high on the re-watch list due to its mammoth size, it is still worth a full five out of five. (Also, Ioan!)

Rating: 5/5.
