“Based on a true story, the film follows two friends in their early 20s (Hill and Teller) living in Miami during the Iraq War who exploit a little-known government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on U.S. Military contracts. Starting small, they begin raking in big money and are living the high life. But the pair gets in over their heads when they land a $300 million deal to arm the Afghan Military—a deal that puts them in business with some very shady people, not the least of which turns out to be the U.S. Government.”

1:13 – 2008 doesn’t sound that long ago, but nearly a decade now, sheesh!
5:19 – Jealous of the nice Miami swimming pools.
8:05 – They seem like odd friends, but I like it.
12:16 – Don’t get on the wrong side of an arms dealer, for sure.

39:46 – Fifty-fifty is terrifying.
47:32 – Mid-car chase refuelling is incredible.
50:21 – The triangle of death, oof.
54:38 – I mean, I was just wondering what it stood for too. I guess I’m fired.
57:11 – “It’s like Comic-Con, with grenades.”
59:53 – Didn’t realise Bradley Cooper was in this, yay!
1:07:06 – Jonah Hill with the gun is having a bit too much fun.
1:08:34 – Faking books for the audit – this film has taken a disturbing turn.
1:13:56 – “We’re gonna leave before you think of something else to say.”
1:26:44 – It is hard to keep up with Christmas, I agree.
1:32:01 – I don’t think he FELL off the planet.
1:43:33 – Always pay the box guy.

Conclusions

The incredible thing about this film is that it manages to take two generally unlikeable characters (well, an awful one and a nondescript one), get them to do some pretty unsavoury things, and still make an interesting and entertaining film about it. It’s drama, through and through, but has the edge of comedy that makes the story worth watching.

I had no idea this kind of thing went on, and it’s really interesting to see how it all unfolded. How two random guys could get so deep into arms dealing that they are driving across borders in Iraq, or looking at abandoned warehouses in Albania. Fascinating, informative, a little scary, but a really good watch. Great job all.

I’ll admit I expected to hate everything about this at the cinema but I’m in total agreement with you here – it’s a sign of how good it is that two awful people can be such compelling characters to watch!
