“Kristen Wiig stars as Imogene, a failed New York playwright who is forced to make the humiliating move back home to New Jersey with her eccentric mother and younger brother after both her career and relationship hit the skids. Adding further insult to injury, there’s a strange man sleeping in her old bedroom and an even stranger man sleeping in her mother’s bed. Through it all, Imogene eventually realises that, as part of her rebuilding process, she must finally come to love and accept both her family and her Jersey roots if she’s ever going to be stable enough to get the hell away from them.”

Conclusions

There were two things that intrigued us about this film, firstly that Trudie Styler was a producer, and secondly that Kristen Wiig is kinda awesome. We snapped up a rental and set about watching.

It was a lot better than I thought it was going to be. I’d expected your more traditional rom-com style story, but this was unusual and quirky, with fun dialogue and fascinating characters. It got a bit too weird and times, and bizarrely predictable despite being weird.

Overall, it was a feel-good story, though, and I really liked it.
