man-of-steelFast Facts

Title: Man of Steel
Director: Zack Snyder
Year: 2013
Run time: 2 hrs 23 mins

Background Info

I was really excited to watch this one, I love the Superman franchise, but the last film really didn’t stand up to snuff. However, the trailer for this new reboot had a stellar cast and seemed to do things properly. So as soon as it came out, I was keen to get it watched.

Live Blog

2:04 – You’d think an alien evolution would steer clear of childbirth the way humans do it. It’s crazy!
4:51 – He has, like, 3D Siri.
13:50 – I’m not totally getting how just one single boy, natural born or not, can represent the future of a planet.
18:59 – So, to punish Zod and his cronies, they sent them off the planet that was about to explode, thus saving their lives. That’s a rookie error right there.
22:54 – It’s good they skipped to him being older. I was worried we’d have to go through all of Smallville first.
28:23 – Also, burning oil rig is pretty, if not environmentally awful.
29:16 – Eeeh-he, Kevin Costner as Superman’s dad.
34:17 – “You’re the answer to are we alone in the universe.”
36:13 – I just remembered Lois Lane always ends up getting rescued. Hopefully brilliant Amy Adams can make her a bit stronger!
38:22 – A corridor of ice deep underground in the dark. I can’t imagine there’s much scarier in terms of locations!
41:46 – The security/monitoring of this big ice discovery is shockingly bad.
48:15 – They want him to have and to be the best of both worlds!
52:13 – If he carries on flying like this, he’ll go back in time.
56:34 – If your son is Superman, surely there is no need to be a hero in the middle of a tornado.
1:01:41 – NORAD have taken time off tracking Santa to pay attention to more important stuff then.
1:08:30 – “The entire world is being threatened. This is not the time to fall back on your journalistic integrity.”
1:25:49 – So basically, she uploaded a virus. Even if it is in the form of Russell Crowe.
1:27:57 – That’s a heck of a crop circle.
1:30:00 – That’s some fast-paced rage, right there.
1:31:04 – “And it hurts, doesn’t it?” Yea, that high-pitched noise really does!
1:38:44 – I like their spaceship, it looks like a turtle.
1:46:49 – I’m quite enjoying Superman’s sonic booms.
2:01:33 – Well, New York is ruined.
2:06:02 – Oh, for a minute there, it looked like there were some buildings still standing. Don’t worry, Superman saw to that.
2:12:49 – I can’t believe even modern day Superman thinks that glasses will fool anyone.

Conclusions

On the positive side, this was better than Superman Returns, and they set everything up for more films in the future. It did suffer from “origin story bloat” in that they had to fit in the whole back story and then try and squeeze in a modern day story as well, which meant it had to be hugely long.

At the same time, they must have cut out lots of stuff. There were times when I felt like I must have been blacking out for seconds at a time, because I had no clue what was happening and scenes were cutting from one to the other as though important plot points had happened in between. Particularly with that woman who Morpheus refused to leave – was she important? Had we ever been introduced to the character beforehand? Where did she come from?

There wasn’t really enough time to bond with the characters, although I did like that Lois wasn’t having to be rescued ALL the time. Considering what a jam-packed amazing cast it was, it was definitely disappointing on the character front.

I’d read vague reviews that mentioned how much destruction there was. I thought there was a lot by the midpoint of the film, but then they went and destroyed significant parts of New York. Considering Superman declared himself “about as American as you get” and his goals of saving mankind rather than ruining them, it seemed odd that he was just as much a part of the destruction as the bad guy.

All in all, it should have been better than it was. It wasn’t a complete letdown, but I did feel baffled at several points along the way.
