Run time: 2hrs 4m
Been waiting for this one for a while. It caught my attention for all the wrong reasons – being the film Mr Cruise was making when he split up with his wife. As I found out more about it, I was intrigued for the right reasons, and then the trailer totally sold it to me.
1:36 – I think I’ve been having mandatory memory wipes, without knowing it.
4:16 – That’s a lot to take in just four minutes in.
8:57 – The views, futuristic and dystopian, are incredibly well done.
12:40 – Aw, the drones are cute and terrifying!
14:18 – Shock alert, Tom Cruise is riding a motorbike. A futuristic one, I’ll grant you, but a two-wheeler nonetheless.
23:30 – Jack Harper is a name quite similar to Jack Reacher.
25:50 – That may be the best thing I’ve seen in my whole life. A thunderstorm underneath the glass-bottomed swimming pool.
31:36 – I love her Surface table thing.
37:28 – I’m going out on a limb to say they are not an effective team anymore.
42:17 – So far, I’d say this is like Alien without the scary bits.
44:35 – 60 years of sleep sounds heavenly.
46:49 – “Our job is not to remember, remember.”
54:38 – It looks like I may have called Morgan Freeman “suspiciously human-shaped” just now.
1:00:44 – That’s a heck of a bunker they’ve got.
1:08:43 – Vika feels like an odd contraction of Victoria when said out loud.
1:14:27 – It’s all gone a little bit Top Gun.
1:14:32 – Actually, make that Star Wars.
1:19:56 – How do you do a fight scene with yourself?
1:33:00 – “They had taken one of our best and turned him against us.”
1:40:15 – I like how they’ve managed to make the droids with some terribly robotic sounds, but the occasional human one in there too.
1:54:05 – Sally has become an oddly terrifying name.
This one has been growing on me ever since we watched it. At first, it seemed an overly complicated (to our tired brains, anyway) plot littered with rip-offs. It was visually stunning, and for that I was happy to keep watching and ignore the plot, but gradually it started to win me round. It started to feel less like it was stealing from other films and more like an homage to all the best bits of sci-fi history. Even after watching, I’ve been thinking about it here and there, realising some of the smaller pieces of the plot and reliving the best bits in my head. If I posted this in a few days or weeks, maybe it would be up to a five!
