Title: This is 40
Director: Judd Apatow
Year: 2012
Run time: 2hrs 14m

Background Info

Neither of us have seen Knocked Up, because Heigl isn’t a favourite and it’s about having a baby which isn’t at the top of our interests. This one looked more interesting, mostly because of Paul Rudd, who I adore. The trailer looked amusing in places, and we finally got round to giving it a go!

Live Blog

2:09 – Ooh, that’s a lot of swearing in just two minutes.
3:23 – Genius to wear a rubber glove when surreptitiously smoking.
6:23 – Uh, he ate the cupcake.
6:58 – “It’s always the guy in the f***ing Infiniti.”
9:47 – Awkward that he’s wearing a LiveStrong t-shirt.
11:34 – “It’s not melting my brain, it’s blowing my mind.”
14:57 – Bonus John Goodman!
20:42 – “I’m warning you, don’t blink.” I’m sure that’s from a different programme.
23:51 – Oreo-man.
34:18 – I could not live under a flight path like that.
39:41 – Hard to see him in anything else now, having seen him as the bad guy in Dexter.
41:12 – You really CAN’T take away the wifi.
44:40 – “I’d poison your cupcakes that you pretend not to eat every day.”
47:02 – He was in Friends!
52:56 – A memory mattress. Huh.
54:18 – “Go play with your tiny uncles.” Ah, modern families.
58:29 – What do you call a bookcase of records? A record case?
1:01:26 – Chris O’Dowd gets better.
1:06:58 – “It’d be so great not to see you for a chunk of time so I could just miss you.”
1:12:42 – Actual Green Day!
1:18:59 – Is it wrong that Megan Fox is better when she’s acting drunk?
1:23:37 – I love an argument that is about Simon & Garfunkel.
1:36:00 – We’ve seen the last two episodes of LOST and still don’t know what happens.
1:44:44 – Well, jeez, at least Megan isn’t just capitalising on her good looks.
1:49:08 – Measuring life in terms of the number of Olympics that have passed.

Conclusions

Somehow, this managed to be both the best and worst film ever. It was quite long, and it was full of children screaming and a lot of adults yelling at each other, and a heck of a lot of swearing. There were several scenes I just didn’t want to know about, and by the end, I had a headache and had to go outside for some fresh air.

BUT, it was also genius. I read a review that labelled it self-indulgent, and I can totally see that. If you don’t like LOST, or never got into it, I’m not sure you’d understand half the storyline with the older kid. And all the stuff with the record label seemed very specific as well. It’s not a film you can recommend to anyone, because who knows if they’ll get the things you got? Thankfully, we loved the references, even if the rest of it was quite painful. “J.J. Abrams is ruining our daughter’s life!”

Rating: I want to say 1/5 AND 5/5, but I think we’ll go for 2/5.

i would not and could not recommend this film to anyone else, yet i really enjoyed it.

far to long, terrible storyline, but the moments of pure brilliance were just so perfect.

i’d watch it again, but if anyone asks, i’ll say avoid at all costs. weird.
