Film Watch – 325. Hitchcock

hitchcockFast Facts

Title: Hitchcock
Director: Sacha Gervasi
Year: 2012
Run time: 1hr 38m

Background Info

I don’t think Hitchcock is a movie that were anxiously waiting for, or were even particularly aware of, until it arrived in the iTunes charts. We were looking for something a bit different, a bit shorter, and of a reasonably easy viewing nature, and this seemed to fit the bill perfectly.

2:31 – I can’t believe that is Anthony Hopkins. It is boggling my mind. If it wasn’t for the voice, you wouldn’t know.
4:38 – “You always know precisely where to plunge the dagger, don’t you?”
8:20 – I didn’t know Psycho was based on a true story. Although I haven’t actually seen it, either.
10:39 – I love her knowing look. Middle of the night, but yes, okay, I will read your book.
11:50 – The word ‘minions’ has been ruined for me now. Ruined in the best possible way.
16:20 – It’s hard to work out if that studio lot is shiny and new because it is a set or because it is probably brand new.
19:24 – Paramount strike a hard bargain.
19:56 – “This is Mr Hitchcock’s next film, are you in or are you out?”
21:41 – Hitch has a boggled brain too!
27:30 – Who knew Hitchcock’s wife was the boss of him?
32:24 – Learning a lot about Hitchy… not all good!
36:25 – Turns out that Jessica Biel with blonde hair like that is the spitting image of Scarlet Johanssen.
39:51 – I really like those glasses that have a chain attached.
48:49 – He has his own little office thing that is like a whole cottage with keys and everything!
50:33 – “He’s like any great artist, impossible to live with but worth the effort.”
56:31 – There’s a lot of “how so?” in this. I approve of that.
1:01:39 – I thought no one knew he owned that place, and how would they know she was there?
1:13:00 – They don’t look very impressed at all!
1:20:28 – I love them working together. Beautiful and hideous relationship – the best creative mix.
1:28:28 – Conducting the audience’s terror.

Conclusions

I said it at the beginning, and then at least six other times throughout, I find it incomprehensible that it is Anthony Hopkins in there. So different. So good.

I think there was a lot that went over our heads here, having neither of us actually seen Psycho. The whole Ed Gein thing was understandable and clear enough but was probably more significant if you knew the story behind it. Regardless, you only really need to know the shower and that iconic noise and the rest takes care of itself.

It was enjoyable from start to finish, some great acting in there, although I thought Scarlet and Jessica were a bit underused – I wonder if there wasn’t more to that story that could have been fleshed out a bit. But otherwise, top notch.
