Film Watch – 242. This Means War

Fast Facts

Title: This Means War
Director: McG
Year: 2012
Run time: 1hr 39

Background Info

Watched this trailer so long ago that I’d forgotten about it, and so it was a surprise when the film was suddenly available on iTunes. Looked reasonable, and if I have to watch a romantic comedy style film, then let it be about spies!

2:35 – “Shots fired, men down.” He’s definitely the bad guy then.
4:37 – I wonder if he always wears a handy parachute. He was just about to get into a helicopter.
6:24 – Is he British? Is he allowed to work for the CIA?
9:55 – 1 in 20 doesn’t seem like the best odds of avoiding something.
11:32 – “The cake is down. Talk to me.”
18:06 – Phew! She referenced his accent. For a minute, I thought I was imagining it.
20:41 – Recommending movies within a movie.
23:45 – He sniffed her! Creepy.
26:14 – It’s already starting to affect their friendship! Silly boys.
29:48 – That’s quite the first date.
35:36 – It makes me chuckle when people get other people’s name wrong frequently on purpose.
41:04 – This is freaking me out. I dance around the kitchen sometimes. Are special ops watching me?
47:33 – What’s wrong with being British??
51:33 – “We might have some constitutional issues here.”
57:56 – How did they make it rain in his house? I worry about the guy with a pool on the roof!
1:00:33 – Itty bitty jazz hands.
1:07:41 – Film in a film! Although, why is he watching Titanic all by himself?
1:13:27 – “Don’t choose the better guy, choose the one who’ll make you a better girl.”
1:14:27 – Booo. They let it get between them, even though they said they wouldn’t.
1:17:11 – Complete 180 and an I told you so all in the same sentence. She’s awesome.
1:20:39 – Why has no one called the police about them fighting and smashing up the whole place?
1:23:35 – OMG! I’m gonna speed it up!
1:23:46 – Or not.
1:29:30 – Oh, now she knows he’s a super cool spy, she likes him again. Blah.

Conclusions

We’ve got in the habit of looking at the Reception bit on Wikipedia for films after we’ve watched them, just to see how much we disagree with the world at large. This one appeared to be universally hated, so it won’t come as a surprise to find that we quite enjoyed it! It was absolutely ridiculous, plot holes and flaws galore, but it was funny and had some charm to it at the same time. The banter between the boys was excellent, I wasn’t as keen on the girls stuff.

I was irritated at the ending, but I think it was the kind of film where I would have been annoyed whichever way it had gone. It was well done, even if it wasn’t necessarily what I wanted.

I’m not going to argue it was a good film, but it was definitely an enjoyable 90 minutes.

love this film, just for the pointless lens flare on the cover shot. i assume Pine brought them with him from the Enterprise. either that or he has someone follow him everywhere with a big spotlight.
