Title: Groundhog Day
Director: Harold Ramis
Year: 1993
Run time: 1hr 41m

“Do you ever have deja vu? Didn’t you just ask me that? Bill Murray is at his wry, wisecracking best in this riotous romantic comedy about a weatherman caught in a personal time warp on the worst day of his life. Teamed with a relentlessly cheerful producer (Andie MacDowell) and a smart-aleck cameraman (Chris Elliott), TV weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is sent to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to cover the annual Groundhog Day festivities. But on his way out of town, Phil is caught in a giant blizzard, which he failed to predict, and finds himself stuck in small-town hell. Just when things couldn’t get worse, they get worse; Phil wakes the next morning to find it’s Groundhog Day all over again… and again… and again.”

0:23 – I don’t remember it having such a jolly start.
0:38 – The clouds remind me of BTTF2.
1:03 – He’s in front of a blue screen, not a green screen. I would never have noticed this two years ago.
1:33 – How has he ever managed to keep a job as a weatherman?
2:07 – Is he a weatherman and a news anchor? Or do weather people just get seats on that station?
2:42 – How do you spell it again? Punksa… Punxatawny? It’s a great name.
3:27 – Was that love at first sight? Within five minutes of the movie? Pah.
4:51 – What have I seen Larry in before? Something where his face is all scabby?
5:45 – Punxsutawney!
5:57 – How ancient does that van look? Satellite paraphernalia on top as well.
6:55 – He’s almost smiling there.
7:34 – “Then put your little hand in mine…” And so it begins.
10:18 – Why does he even bother to check his pockets for the tramp? It’s not like he cares what anyone thinks.
10:50 – I wonder how the whistle blowing belly button trick goes.
12:00 – That hole filled with ice is a serious hazard. Someone call the council.
13:54 – GROUNDHOG!
15:43 – I’m like that in my car, too. “Nobody honks that horn but me.”
17:26 – “Tastes like chicken.”
17:55 – Lesson learned. Always check the shower before you get in.
18:47 – Two questions – did he figure out how to set that alarm to come on with the radio? That’s quite smart, really. And can people really wake up to just radio?
21:06 – She has polystyrene cups in the B&B?
22:45 – It’s funny that the natural reaction is to repeat the actions of the previous day. I guess to test if it all really is the same.
24:10 – GROUNDHOG! (I won’t do it every time.)
24:48 – “What if there is no tomorrow? There wasn’t one today.”
26:11 – He seems to be in such a hurry, wouldn’t he have missed Ned by being a minute or so earlier?
30:11 – I wonder what day I would like over and over.
32:21 – I reckon three days is a bit early to start being reckless, isn’t it?
33:10 – Would the police really follow onto the tracks and put themselves in danger as well?
36:10 – The wardrobe budget on this must have been cheap, everyone is wearing the same clothes over and over.
36:31 – Is he not getting older then? Not fair to get wiser and not older.
38:29 – Some weirdo asking questions about high school? I’m not sure I would answer.
44:16 – Coffee? No. Donut? Go on then.
46:52 – He has to sabotage that van every day.
48:05 – I swear I would be more freaked out if this grumpy man suddenly started being all nice and knowing everything about me.
57:54 – How many days is it now? Is there any official word on how long he was in limbo?
1:01:01 – I wants a groundhog.
1:01:40 – Do you think they’re following him because it’s Phil going mental, or because they want to capture a great story?
1:02:25 – How cute is that? Driving groundhog!
1:04:46 – I’m curious what happens between being dead and waking up in the morning.
1:13:20 – And if he stays awake… how can he then be asleep at 6am?
1:13:39 – They had a much nicer day together when he was honest.
1:14:46 – She gets the most annoying lines. “Did you say something?” “Is it raining? I hadn’t noticed.”
1:18:43 – No freaking way did he make that sculpture? How does one even learn a skill like ice sculpting?
1:22:34 – My TweetDeck just ruined that nice speech of his.
1:24:05 – How does one stay comfortable whilst someone is jacking up the car.
1:24:28 – I like how the same people turn up all over the place. It’s a small town, and it’s fun spotting them.
1:32:48 – How does one make a noise like that? Is it a purr? A growl?
1:34:10 – I wonder why it was too fast for her before but not this time.
1:35:54 – “You said stay, so I stayed.” Gah.

Conclusions

There are no other films out there like this. It’s one of a kind, unique. With the benefit of over ten years on the market, it’s also become a cult classic, one of those seminal films that you have to see. I don’t always enjoy Bill Murray in films, but this one just works.

Rating: 4/5.

  1. Is he someone important I should know?

He only played Egon Spengler in Ghostbusters!

Groundhog Day is one of those films I can sit and watch again and again and never bore of (in the Back to the Future mould). For some, very strange reason, the other-half hates it with a passion. She apparently finds it “very repetitive.”

  2. I guess I should add Ghostbusters to my “to watch” list?

Maybe. I watched it the other day and time hasn’t been too kind to it.

    My suggestion: The Kirate Kid.

    Classic!

  3. I really love this movie for some reason. It plays with some interesting concepts and is truely redemptive. He has to change to get out of his situation. But in the end we realize he actually has learned that he wants to change for himself. Quite a random concept and Harold Ramis proved with this movie he actually is a very good director.

The scabs guy has scabs in there’s something about Mary from memory.

  4. Please tell me Film Watch – 02 will be Groundhog Day, Film Watch – 03 will be Groundhog Day and so on, ad infinitum!

Or if you must watch something else, give The Frighteners a try, a Peter Jackson/ Michael J Fox film from a while ago which I love and nobody else seems to even like a teensy weensy bit…

Hehehe. Sadly not. Have added your suggestions to the list.

Bill Murray. makes the downtrodden look a career! Try Caddyshack or Stripes…… it’s all good!

I don’t remember ever seeing him smile!

I’ve never liked this film. It just annoys me for some inexplicable reason.

I guess if you don’t relate to the character at all, it’s a waste of time. Either that, or like Dank says, it’s too repetitive. I can see that being a legitimate complaint (although quite funny!)
